CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Of a Wedding & a School Master

Thursday, June 16, 1729

Standing at the door was a familiar face wearing his usual long black coat, black britches and gray stockings. Seeing Liz, Mister Horvath took off his black tricorne, “Good afternoon Miss. Is Mistress Tibbetts about?”

“She is sir,” she began to turn then stopped and glanced at the sweating government courier, “May I also fetch you a cup of water?”

“’Twould be most appreciated, Miss, yes.”

“A moment sir.” Liz walked back down the hall to the kitchen and entered. “Mama the courier gentleman…”

Tamsen had set the dishes down beside the tub as Liz poured water into a mug, “You mean Mister Horvath?”

“The same. He is at the front door.” Liz followed her mother towards the open door.

When Tamsen reached the threshold, the courier had already extracted the wax sealed parchment from his satchel and held it out to her. “Mister Horvath, good afternoon.” As she was taking the offered letter, Liz passed him the mug of water.

He held the mug, “And a good afternoon to you Mistress Tibbetts. It is good to see you again.

He raised the offered mug to his lips and took a long drink. He paused, “It has been uncommonly hot today ladies.” He paused, took a few more swallows and continued, “I watered my horse on the way in but did not stop for a drink myself.” Holding out the mug to Liz who took it back, “This was most appreciated, Miss, thank you.”

Tamsen smiled, “You are most welcome, Mister Horvath.”

The courier replaced his tricorne, put two fingers to his brim and smiled, “Again, Mistress Tibbetts a pleasure to see you…and you too Miss.” He turned and walked back down the steps to his horse.

Tamsen called as he mounted the gray mare, “May you have a safe journey, Mister Horvath.” The courier smiled, gave a two-finger salute and walked his horse down the street.

Liz closed the door and bolted it. Tamsen strolled into the dining room and placed the letter on the table to be opened and read at tea.

At afternoon tea, the whole family congregated at the table. Elizabeth, Abby and Anne served tea with a plate of vanilla cookies she had just baked. Word of the ‘official’ letter had spread through the household. Even the boys who were playing catch in the street came in to learn what had been sent to their parents from the government of New Hampshire.

The steamy weather had continued into the afternoon and in the west, clouds had been building in tall columns of billowing whiteness all day. In the distance a rumbling could be heard. The growling and the presence the alabaster columns foretold, to those who observed such phenomena, a storm may be heading to Dover. Tamsen watched Elizabeth pour the tea and Anne passed around the plate of cookies. Once everyone was served and most had tasted their tea, eyes kept a constant check on the piece of wax sealed parchment sitting near the center of the table but closer to John.
